Questions From You Page II Plus Tips

Question: My 327 is overheating I've replaced radiator which helped. Replaced water pump, the fan clutch was bad so I used flex fan still no change. I even had the freeze plugs remove and engine block cleaned inside. It needed the freeze plugs any why's. Replaced thermostat and gasket, and sending unit. Still running over 200 degrees oil press dropping when hot. I also have mechanical temperature gage and oil gage. Can you give me some help.

Answer : I bet your timing is off, these old engine run pretty cool the cooling system holds over five gallons of water.

(foot note)  if your fan clutch goes bad there is no NOS. replacement. Remove your water pump have the adaptor on end of pump press off turn it over and press back on. A images/waterpump.jpg (6977 bytes) Chevy 427 fan clutch will work.  Don't try to remove the adaptor from pump at home you'll destroy the pump. A Rambler 250 V8 is the same pump.

(foot note) Radiator can be replace with newer AMC car with V8 heavy duty cooling system. You must drill four new mounting holes in radiator bracket that's  it.

Thanks Jim all it was, was the timing, oil pressure is around 45 lbs. Thanks again

Next found item called "J" hooks they come in different lengths, you might need to saw of the extra length. Make sure you measure from the mounting area to top of battery for the proper length for the J- hooks. Found all this in battery section in the parts store.

Question : Seems to be a lot of slop in the shifter related to the 2 shoulder bolts that hold the shifter to the shift mechanism.

When shifter was removed to drop transmission, found 4 rubber washers under the shifter handle assembly, looked like rubber washers used on garden hoses!

Question is: aren't the shoulder bolts supposed to hold the mechanism down FIRMLY to the rest of the shifter mechanism?

What may be missing or is there a means of getting rid of the slop?? Some type of rebuild kit available??

Transmission does shift ok, just appears to be more slop than I think there should be.

Answer :   I thought you might have a 67 after I sent the note. Yes the 67 has insulators under mounting bolts first the bolt then a steel washer then the insulators. There is some movement in the shifter the insulators are there to kept vibration to a minimum.

Question:     I have a 66 Marlin the lower section of the fenders are rusted by the wheel opening! What will work as a patch panel?

Question:  My lifters are making noise! Seen your post about oil hole on the shaft 287 327 v8, and about hollow bolt so I checked. What I found was the rockers have adjustment screw on all of them? What up is this something special? Might I have a racing engine high output motor?

Answer :  What I think you might have is a 63 or 64 V8 installed in your car. These engine had solid lifters and the cam is also different. You would have to check the id of the engine. Refer to a 63 or 64 service manual for adjustments on the rockers.

Question:    I am having difficulty in pulling a 327 V-8 and automatic
transmission out of my 65 Marlin.  I am hoping I can explain my
problem and that you will be able to tell me what to do.

I took off the brake master cylinder/power booster, the alternator,
fan, and radiator.  I removed the nuts from the motor mounts.  I
removed the cross member that sits under the transmission.  I removed
the four bolts that attach the enclosed drive shaft to the
transmission.  I attached the engine hoist to the engine.  When I
raise the engine and start to pull it out of the car, what I call the
bell housing hits a rod that is part of the suspension.

Questions:

Is it possible to pull the engine and transmission at the same time?

Should the transmission go over the suspension rod (That is what I call it)?

Do I need to unbolt and lower the suspension rod?

Is there a trick or procedure to follow to pull the engine and transmission?

When I pull the engine and transmission will the transmission slide
out of the drive shaft?

Will the 327 V-8 and automatic transmission from a 65 Marlin fit in a
66 Marlin equipped with the 287 V-8 and automatic transmission?

Answer: You also there, the engine and trans wont come out together. You need to unbolt the bell housing from the engine. But first remove inspection plate at bottom of bell housing remove can't remember either nuts or bolt holding fly wheel to converter.  Next remove bolts holding bell housing to engine not the four bolts holding transmission to the bell housing . Reason is transmission has to come forward about 6 to 10 inches, it's better to leave the transmission hooked up in the car . When this is done the engine has to come forward about 2" or 3" I haven't took one out in over twenty years

Hope this helps you. Jim

Question : I just tried adjusting my natural safety switch the car is a 65 with automatic transmission floor shift. I did what the factory manual says to do . Wont work when I put it in park which is very hard sometime , I have to put it in natural to start. I think there is something wore out the shifter has back and forth play. What should I look for.

Answer: You probably have a broken pin in the shifter , this pin goes through the bottom of the shift lever. This is a few hours to fix but if you still have the console still removed your half way there. If not remove per manual don't forget the two nuts behind the seat the holds the console to the floor. Next  jack up driver side of the car remove the cotter pin from shift linkage at the end where it comes through the floor not at the transmission end . From inside car remove upper four bolts that hold the steel and plastic bracket to the shifter mark one corner as front.  Next look down in side the shifter housing and see if you see part of a pin laying in the bottom of the bracket. If not move the shifter back and forth you should see a fare amount of play. If so remove the four bolds holding the shifter the floor shift housing , you have to play with this a while might even have to use a flat bladed screw driver to pry the shifter from the sheet metal housing. Ok you  got it  you should see a pin in the chrome shifter lever at bottom remove this pin if it's a bolt it been repaired before and the bolt is just wore down. When you get the pin out it will broken in two replace this with a bolt that is long enough to go through the shifter bracket and have two nut installed on bold the bold should have shoulder on it you'll have to drive it through  shifter .Grease the long pin that goes through the housing put some 30 wt. oil on the bottom of the shift lever where you installed the broken pin. Reinstall other parts in reverse order.  From under the car install the cotter pin in shifter don't bend pin yet. Now from in side of the car rove the shifter should feel tighter  if there is movement front to back  put shifter in park from under the car removed the cotter pin  work the shifter rod back and forth  put it in part see if the rod lines put with the shifter lever if not turn rod in or out till the rod goes into the lever. Install cotter pin bend ears down. Remove jack and jack stand. Re adjust the natural safety switch per manual. Start car run thought the gear selection back to park turn car off now see if it starts in parks , also try natural position .

TIP: I had my Marlin in storage out side with cover on it , I know I have a slight water leak in my vent. The car is never out in the weather this is the first time. Well  I took to friend house , he was not quite ready for me so I left it . He covered the vent area with plastic and taped it down. Then covered it. Well were in Florida the temp is always 90 + every day . When I got the car and removed the tape it left glue residue I tried acetone,  thinner, lighter fluid, gas, rubbing compound , and wax. Nothing would remove it. Problem Solved Blue Magic Metal Polish rubbed it on and wiped it off and it was gone, the car had set in my car port for a week before I  had tried this.

TIP: 65 marlin headlight rims getting dull try clear paint will bring back the shine.
